Oral history interview with Marc Angel, July 18, 1978.

Angel discusses his early life in Seattle's Cherry Street neighborhood, his education, his religious development, and his career. He describes his early experiences in the two Sephardic synagogues, Ezra Bessaroth and Sephardic Bikur Holim. He notes the strong influence on his formative years of his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Marco Romey, and of the various synagogues and their rabbis: Isidore Kahan, Abraham Shalem, William Greenberg, Solomon Maimon, Gersion Appel, Sholom Rivkin, and Chaim Zvi Hollander. He comments on his elementary schooling at the Seattle Hebrew Day School in the 1950s and criticizes its educational structure at the time. He also discusses his subsequent schooling at Sharples Junior High and Franklin High School, where he was one of the few observant Jewish students. Angel talks about his after-school Jewish studies at Yeshiva Rabbi Hayyim Ozer and his Talmud studies at Congregation Bikur Cholim. He also discusses the basis for attitudes of Seattle Ashkenazim toward Sephardim and of Sephardim toward themselves. Angel discusses his higher education in New York at Yeshiva University and at Queens College, his decision to enter the rabbinate, and his position as assistant rabbi of Searith Israel (Spanish and Portuguese) Congregation of New York City.
